Schematic representation of a trial in the speech-in-noise (SIN) task. The SIN task had two conditions—the audiovisual (AV, top panel) and the auditory only (A, bottom panel). In the AV condition, participants saw a video of the piglet articulating target words. In the A condition, the video portion was replaced with a static image of the piglet’s face with her mouth open. The appearance of the open mouth picture in the A condition cued the participants to the fact that the onset of the auditory word is imminent but provided no visual speech cues to its identity.
